勝色は、紺よりもさらに濃い、黒色に見えるほどの暗い藍色のこと。
色名の「かつ」は、 藍を濃く染み込ませるために布などを搗つ(叩くの意)ことからきており、『搗色』『褐色』の字があてられました。鎌倉時代になると武士たちが濃い藍染の質実剛健さを好み、さらに「かつ」に「勝」の字をあてて縁起色としたのが色名の由来です。

The color name “katsu” comes from the meaning of pounding (beating) cloth to make it deeply soaked with indigo, and the characters “peach color” and “brown” were given to the color. In the Kamakura period, samurai liked the simplicity and robustness of deep indigo dyeing, and the color name came from the fact that they added the character “katsu” to “katsu” to make it an auspicious color.
